Physical Education
Yearly Plan: The yearly physical education plan is based on the basic movement skills which are the building blocks on which all other movement is based. These skills are prerequisites to many lifetime and sports movement skills. These skills can be grouped into three areas:
- Manipulation Skills: Manipulation skills are skills associated with the ability to receive, handle, control or propel an object with the hands or feet or with an implement. They include- rolling, bouncing, catching, underhand throwing, overhand throwing, striking and kicking.
- Transport Skills: Transport skills enable a child to move from one point to another and are initially performed individually and then in combination. They include running, jumping, hopping, galloping and skipping.
- Balancing Abilities: Balancing abilities underlie all movement. Balance is necessary to maintain and control body position and posture while at rest or in motion. Balance is characterized as static (stationary) and dynamic (moving).
Students are provided the opportunity for these outcomes in general and specific classes throughout the school year.
The acquisition of these movement skills encompasses three developmental phases. They include the Initial Phase, Formative Phase and Mature Phase. The initial phase represents a child's first attempts at performing a movement skill. The formative phase represents a period of transition in performing a movement skill. The mature phase represents a period when all aspects of a skill can be used and applied to a variety of situations.
A child's development may be affected by motivation, maturation, previous opportunity, cognitive process and physical capability. This is why the Kindergarten to Grade 4 curriculum provides a wide range and time frame to develop the curricular skills.
Safety skills, fitness management skills and knowledge are also clustered in the movement activities through games, individual skill development and group activities.
Throughout the school year the Fair Play principles (personal and social management) and Fit for Life (healthy lifestyle practices) are promoted and encouraged.
