Louis Riel Day (February 17, 2025)

Monday, February 17, 2025, is recognized as Louis Riel Day in Manitoba.  This day commemorates the life and legacy of Louis Riel, a prominent Métis leader and a key figure in the history of Manitoba. Riel played a significant role in the fight for Métis rights and the recognition of their identity, culture, and land.

On Louis Riel Day, various events and activities are held to honor his contributions. People gather to celebrate Métis culture through music, dance, traditional food, and storytelling. It is a time to reflect on the importance of embracing diversity and understanding the history of Indigenous peoples in Canada. Louis Riel Day serves as a reminder of the ongoing efforts towards reconciliation and the need to recognize the rights and contributions of Métis and other Indigenous communities.

All BSD Schools and Facilities will be closed on Monday, February 17, 2025, in observance of Louis Riel Day.   Classes will resume on Tuesday, February 18, 2025 (School Day 4).
